Personal Statement

Adaptation and change are strong themes in my work as they have been overwhelmingly present in my life. Adaptation is required in everyone’s life, no matter what type of life they live. It is a skill that is vital to survival. The emotions that are tied to these types of changes are so complex and interesting to explore. I enjoy relating these themes to animals and nature. Many of my favorite artists, Beatrix Potter, Richard Scarry, Walton Ford, and Don Bluth, all used animals in their works to represent different aspects of an idea or to show character traits or create a compelling narrative. The figure is another concept in art that I find very intriguing. Alphonse Mucha, Bob Montana, and Jhonen Vazquez were all artists whose stylization of the human body are fascinating to me. I love experimenting with texture, line, and color in my work. These elements can convey so many emotions and meanings.
